Environmental Achievements

2013: Worldwide Environmental Audit performed at all Armacell plants with the support of ERM (Environmental Resources Management), one of the world’s leading sustainability consulting companies. The audit reveals no environmental issues.
2012: Armacell develops the first solvent-free adhesive for installing flexible elastomeric foams in order to meet the ever-increasing requirements of green-building practices.
2011: Armacell Code of Conduct: Armacell adopts a code of conduct, which obliges all employees worldwide to act ethically. The code of conduct is based on values and principles that are valid throughout the Armacell group.
2010: Armacell wins the prestigious AVK Innovation Prize for its fully recyclable ArmaFORM PET product in the category Environment.
2009: Armacell becomes a founding member of the European Industrial Insulation Foundation (Eiif), the purpose of which is to promote the use of optimized insulation systems in industrial plants.
2009: Armacell becomes the first manufacturer of flexible technical-insulation materials in the world to undergo an ecobalance analysis (Life Cycle Assessment), demonstrating that the use of Armaflex products save 140 times more energy than is required for their production, transport and disposal.
2008: After the earthquake in Sichuan Province, China, Armacell makes a spontaneous donation of 10,000 euros to aid organizations working in the area. Armacell employees throughout the world raise 10,000 additional euros, to which the company adds a sum of 5,000 euros. Support is given not only to the Red Cross and a fund for school reconstruction, but also to Armacell employees affected by the earthquake.
2007: Armacell installs an innovative exhaust-air-combustion system at the company headquarters in Münster, Germany, Armacell's largest production plant worldwide. By making this environmental investment – the largest in company history — Armacell reduces measurable air pollutants at this plant by 90%.
2006: Armacell begins a broad informational campaign on the potential savings that can be achieved by insulating hot pipes in buildings (EPBD-campaign).
2006: Armacell’s Thai subsidiary receives the prestigious Prime Minister’s Industry Award for its innovative energy-management program.
2006: Armacell joins the U.N. Global Compact, the world’s most important business network for sustainable globalization. The members of the Global Compact commit themselves to promoting the implementation of ten fundamental principles involving environmental protection, compliance with labor standards, combating corruption and the general protection of human rights. They also publicly advocate for the objectives of the pact.
2005: Armacell receives the Ethics in Business Award for its exceptional commitment to the environment and social issues.
2005: A Tsunami relief fund is set up resulting in donations of 50,000 euros benefiting long-term humanitarian and ecological projects in the area.
2005: The Chinese Panyu location is certified according to ISO 14001, making Armacell the first, and as of yet the only, manufacturer of flexible technical-insulation materials in China to have gained the environmental certificate.
2004: The Centre for Sustainable Building presents the final report of the CO2-study.
2003: Armacell establishes an integrated management system bringing together quality management and environmental protection under one harmonized system.
2001: Armacell commissions the Centre for Sustainable Building (Zentrum für umweltbe­wusstes Bauen) at the University of Kassel, Germany, to carry out a scientific study on the potential for energy savings by insulating heating and hot-water pipes with Armaflex (CO2-Study).
2000: The insulation products division of Armstrong World Industries is sold and begins to do business under the name Armacell. The new company continues to stand for everything that typified Armstrong Insulation Products and commits itself publicly to environmental protection.
2000: Armacell Iberia is the first Spanish company in this line of business to stop using HCFCs in the manufacture of its polyethylene products. The propellant is replaced by environmentally friendly Isobutan.
1997: Armstrong Insulation Products becomes a founding member of EuroACE, the European alliance for energy efficiency in buildings, formed by the European Commission after the world climate summit in Kyoto.
1997: The Environmental Management System at Armstrong Insulation Products in Münster is certified in accordance with ISO 14001 and receives one of the first EMAS certificates in the Münsterland, Germany.
1996: Armstrong Insulation Products establishes procedure for assessing raw materials from an ecological point of view.
1996: The company builds its own recycling plant for scrap resulting from the production of Armaflex.
1995: Armstrong Insulation Products introduces an environmental-management system at the company headquarters in Münster, Germany.
1994: An Environmental Steering Team is set up to examine the environmental soundness of all business processes from the purchase of raw materials to the transportation of goods.
1993: A regular internal environmental audit is established. At three-year intervals, every production facility worldwide is audited in accordance with the environmental legislation of the country in which it is located. Additional recommendations are made that go above and beyond the legislation.
1992: First lifecycle assessment is initiated in cooperation with the Institute for Ecological Economic Research Berlin (IÖW). An annual waste balance sheet and a waste-management concept is introduced at the Münster plant.
1991: Armstrong publicly commits itself to environmental protection.
1991: Armstrong becomes an active member of 'future e.V'’, a business initiative for in-company environmental protection.
